Medio Bluestem (Andropogon nodosus)
Medio was Introduced from India and first observed on the Medio Creek in Bee County, Texas by Soil Conservation Service personnel in 1940. Medio is a warm-season perennial that is dark green and very leafy. It is fine stemmed and forms a dense turf. It reproduces by self-seeding & spreading rapidly by means of prostrate stems. Emerging in late spring, Medio achieves growth in summer and late fall. Medio is suited to the richer, heavier soils of the Blacklands. It also produces well in the clay soils of South Texas. Medio should not be planted in sandy soils. Medio’s cold tolerance extends no further north than a line from San Marcos to LaGrange, TX. Adaptation: Grows best on heavier soils with 25″ or more annual precipitation. Responds well to fertilizer and/or irrigation. Medio is one of the most dominant species planted in the Blacklands of Central Texas, south of San Marcos. Intended Use: Range reseeding, pastureland, hay production and erosion control.
