A warm season perennial sod forming grass introduced from Africa. Grows 4 inches to 1 foot tall, dark bluish-green sod grass with both rhizomes and stolons that take root at nodes. The internodes are flattened. The ligule is a conspicuous ring of white hairs. The inflorescence has 3-6 purple spikes which resemble a bird’s foot.
Adaptation: Adapted to most soil types, performs best on sandy to mix soils. Grows in areas with 25″ annual rainfall or greater.
Uses: Poor for wildlife, good grazing for livestock, excellent erosion control and fair for hay production. A common lawn and pasture grass of the South. Responds well to high fertility. Excellent for over seeding tanks and waterways.
